The basics

What Is a Custom Balloon Installation?

If it hangs overhead, spans a room, takes a recognizable shape or carries a brand, it's an installation.

A custom balloon installation is designed for one specific space and built on-site, and it's usually larger or more structural than an arch, garland or column. Picture a balloon ceiling over a dance floor, a cloud floating above a sweetheart table, a 30 ft entrance arch for a shop opening, a giant mosaic number, a walk-through tunnel or a logo built from balloons. This is the point where balloon decor turns into balloon art.

Since every installation is built for its room, it begins with a site measure and a design rather than a price list. It's the right choice when the room is large, the event is high-profile, or you want something guests haven't seen before. For standard pieces, see balloon arches, garlands, walls, columns and backdrops.

What we install

Types of Custom Balloon Installations

These are the installations San Diego venues, brands and hosts request most.

Balloon ceilings

A balloon ceiling fills the space above the guests: helium balloons resting against the ceiling with ribbons trailing down, air-filled balloons hung upside down at staggered heights, or garlands swagged from wall to wall. It turns a plain parish hall or school gym into an event space and is a favorite for prom, quinceañeras, debuts, weddings and holiday parties.

Hanging balloons, canopies and chandeliers

Garlands suspended over a long table, a balloon canopy over a dance floor or inside a tent, or balloons wrapped around an existing chandelier (or a balloon chandelier built on a hoop) bring the decor up to eye level and above without using any floor space.

Balloon clouds

A balloon cloud is a soft, floating mass of white and clear balloons, sometimes with a few pastel or metallic accents, hung above a table or used as a backdrop. Cloud nine birthdays, baby showers and dreamy wedding setups use them most.

Balloon drops

A balloon drop holds hundreds of balloons in a net or bag overhead and lets them go at one moment: the New Year's Eve countdown, a gender reveal, a grand entrance, the last song at prom or a product launch. Drops are rigged before guests arrive and released with a pull cord at the right second. They're an indoor piece: outside, loose balloons ride the breeze into the street, the canyon or the ocean.

Balloon sculptures and balloon art

Large balloon sculptures take on a shape people recognize: a giant number, a surfboard, a wave, a cake, a mascot or a logo. Balloon art pieces for galleries, schools and brand events can be built life-size or bigger.

Balloon trees, palm trees and topiaries

Balloon palm trees for luaus and pool parties, topiaries for formal events and balloon Christmas trees for holiday lobbies are freestanding pieces that work like balloon columns with a shape on top. Palm trees fit San Diego backyards especially well.

Balloon tunnels

A balloon tunnel is a run of arches set close together that guests walk through. It makes a memorable wedding entrance, a school walkway, a fun-run finish line or a shop-opening path.

Balloon mosaics, number towers and marquee letters

A balloon mosaic fills a number, letter or shape frame with small balloons so it reads like a pixel picture. Mosaic numbers and letters spell an age, an initial or a class year, and marquee letters wrapped with balloons add light. They're among the pieces we're asked for most for birthdays and graduations.

Balloon wreaths and giant balloons

Balloon wreaths frame a front door or a welcome sign. Giant balloons, 36 inches and up and sometimes filled with confetti, create big moments for gender reveals, proposals and photo shoots.

Process

How a Custom Installation Comes Together

Large pieces take a little more groundwork. This is the order it happens in.

  1. 1

    Brief

Tell us the event, the date, the venue and what you're picturing. Photos, mood boards and brand guidelines all help.

  2. 2

    Site details

We confirm room dimensions, ceiling height, rigging points, power, load-in times and venue rules, either on a visit or from your photos and measurements.

  3. 3

    Design and quote

You receive a design plan and a written quote. Large installs are priced by scope, not by the foot.

  4. 4

    Build day

We load in during the venue's window, build on-site and walk the space with you before doors open.

  5. 5

    Strike

Everything comes down at the end of the event or the next morning, whichever the venue requires.

Venue rules to ask about early: hotels downtown, in Mission Valley and along the bay commonly set load-in and strike windows, ask vendors for a certificate of liability insurance, limit helium tanks, ban tape on walls and need approval before anything hangs from the ceiling. In Encinitas, Solana Beach and Del Mar, helium balloons are restricted by city ordinance, so installations there are designed air-filled. We check all of this before quoting so build day holds no surprises.

Large installs are quoted after a site measure. Venue load-in rules and late-night strikes can add to the total.

How much is balloon art? It scales with the square footage or length covered, the number and size of balloons, rigging and lift needs (ceiling height matters a lot), helium where it's allowed, labor hours, overnight or after-hours load-in, insurance paperwork and same-night strike. Send your venue and ceiling height and we'll scope it properly.

Occasions

Balloon Installations for Weddings, Proms, Debuts and Holidays

These are the nights when guests should stop in the doorway and look up.

  • New Year's Eve: an indoor drop at midnight, a black-and-gold chrome ceiling and a countdown wall.
  • Christmas and office holiday parties: balloon trees, snowy white-and-silver ceilings and lobby pieces.
  • Halloween and Día de los Muertos: spooky sculptures, black-and-orange garlands, marigold-toned installs and themed tunnels.
  • Weddings: balloon clouds over the sweetheart table, ceilings over the dance floor and a drop for the first dance or last song.
  • Gender reveals: indoor balloon drops, giant confetti balloons and cloud reveals.
  • Prom, homecoming and graduation: a ceiling over the gym floor, a tunnel at the door and the class year as a mosaic.
  • Quinceañeras and debuts: ceilings over the dance floor, an entrance tunnel for the court and a mosaic of her initial.
  • Milestone birthdays: a drop at the toast, or the new age built as a mosaic.

Timing

Booking Lead Times for Balloon Installations

Give large installations three to six weeks.

A mosaic number or a living-room balloon drop can usually be booked a week or two ahead. Ceilings, tunnels, sculptures and any hotel or venue build need three to six weeks to cover design, the venue's sign-off and special-order balloons. December weekends, New Year's Eve, prom season in spring, May and June graduations, and Comic-Con week in July, when downtown loading docks and hotel schedules are packed, book up first.

Questions

Custom Balloon Installations in San Diego: FAQ

How much do people charge for balloon decor?

With us, a tabletop arch starts at $195, garlands at $20 per foot, columns at $85 each and custom installations at $450. Mosaic numbers start at $225 and marquee letters at $45 each. Ceilings, drops, tunnels and sculptures are quoted per project.

What is a balloon ceiling?

It's balloons covering the space above your guests: helium balloons floating up against the ceiling with ribbons trailing down, air-filled balloons suspended at staggered heights, or garlands swagged from wall to wall.

What is a balloon drop?

A net or bag overhead holds hundreds of balloons, then lets them fall at a planned moment: the midnight countdown, a gender reveal, a grand entrance or the last dance. It's an indoor piece.

How many balloons go into a balloon drop?

For a living room or small space, 100–250 balloons. For a dance floor or ballroom, 500–1,500 or more. The size of the drop area and the ceiling height set the count.

Can you use helium in Encinitas, Solana Beach or Del Mar?

Those three cities restrict helium-filled balloons by ordinance, so installations there are designed air-filled: hung, framed or built on stands instead of floated. Air-filled pieces also last longer.

How long do ceiling balloons last?

Helium ceilings are at their best for roughly 8–12 hours, which is why they go up on the day. Hung air-filled pieces stay good indoors for several days.

How much notice does a balloon installation need?

Give ceilings, tunnels, sculptures and anything at a hotel or venue three to six weeks. A mosaic number or a balloon drop at home usually needs only one to two.

Do venues allow balloon installations?

Most do, with conditions. Venues commonly require vendor liability insurance, set load-in and strike times, and may limit helium, tape and anything hung from the ceiling. We confirm the rules before quoting.

How much is balloon art?

Balloon art pieces such as sculptures, mosaics and logo builds start at $225 for a 3 ft mosaic number and $450 for a custom installation. Large sculptures are quoted on size, balloon count and labor.
