The basics

Columns, Towers and Pillars Explained

Balloon columns, towers, pillars and posts all describe one thing: balloons stacked up a pole that stands in a weighted base.

Because a column stands by itself, usually 5 to 8 feet tall, it can go nearly anywhere: both sides of a front door, each end of a stage, down a ceremony aisle, at the corners of a dance floor or next to a conference booth. No other piece of balloon decor is as easy to move around, and it's the simplest way to add height to a room without rigging anything overhead.

Columns are also the most budget-friendly way to mark an entrance. A pair costs less than a full balloon arch, and the tops can be joined later with a garland to make the classic arch-and-columns entry that school dances and store openings rely on.

Column styles

Balloon Column Styles

Every column starts with the same pole and base. The pattern built onto it is what changes.

Classic stacked columns

Tight four-balloon clusters stacked straight up the pole, in a single color or in color bands. Bold, tidy and the lowest-priced column we make.

Spiral columns in two, three or four colors

Shift the colors one position in each cluster and they twist up the pole like a barber's stripe. Two colors look clean, three colors (red, white and blue for a homecoming or the 4th of July) get requested most, and four colors suit rainbow parties and team themes.

Organic balloon columns

Mixed balloon sizes grouped loosely give a softer, fuller column that matches an organic arch or garland. They take more balloons than classic columns, so they cost more, and they're the modern pick for weddings and showers.

Themed and novelty columns

Columns can turn into characters and objects: a palm tree for a luau or a surf party, a pencil for back-to-school, a traffic light for a race-car birthday, a Grinch at Christmas, a lighthouse for a nautical baby shower. Themed columns are a fun way to dress a school hallway or a kids' party.

Toppers

Balloon Columns With Numbers and Toppers

The topper is the part that makes a column about your event.

  • Number toppers: a 34- or 40-inch foil number on top for an age, an anniversary or a class year. It's the column people ask for more than any other.
  • Stars, hearts and crowns: foil shapes for graduations, Valentine's Day, quinceañeras and debuts.
  • Bubble balloon toppers: a clear bubble balloon filled with confetti or feathers.
  • Grad caps and diplomas: for grad parties and senior nights.
  • Logo or letter panels: for company events and store openings.

Sizing

Balloon Column Heights and Balloon Counts

A standard column stands about 6 feet tall before the topper goes on.

Column heights and approximate balloon counts
ColumnHeightBalloons (approx.)
Mini or tabletop column2–3 ft12–20
Standard classic or spiral column5–6 ft40–60 (11-inch)
Tall classic column7–8 ft60–80 (11-inch)
Organic column5–7 ft60–100+ (mixed sizes)

Counts cover the body of the column. Toppers, bases and clusters at the foot add a few more.

What size balloon for a column? Most columns are built from 11-inch latex balloons in four-balloon clusters, which makes a column about 18–20 inches across. Organic columns work in 5-inch and 16- to 18-inch balloons for texture.

Pricing

How Much Do Balloon Columns Cost in San Diego?

Most single columns land between $85 and $275, depending on the style and the topper.

Balloon column pricing
ColumnStarting at
Mini tabletop column$55
Classic column$85
Spiral column (2–4 colors)$105
Themed column (graduation, holiday)$145
Organic column$165
Balloon tower with number or star topper$185

Prices are per column, delivered and set in place within our core San Diego service area.

How much for two balloon columns? Most entrances use a pair, so budget roughly $170–$550 for two, depending on style. A pair is priced better than two singles, and adding an arch between them costs less than ordering the pieces separately.

Placement

Where Balloon Columns Go

Columns look best in pairs, framing something.

Entrances

Either side of a front door, a venue entry or a storefront, so nobody has to ask where the party is.

Stages and DJ booths

A column at each end of the stage or DJ table frames whoever is speaking or spinning in every photo.

Ceremony aisles

Short columns down the aisle, or a tall pair where the couple stands, from garden venues to hotel lawns.

Dance floors

Columns at the corners of the floor, sometimes joined overhead with a garland canopy.

Conference and trade show booths

Brand-color columns help a booth stand out down a long convention hall aisle.

Gyms and school halls

Lines of school-color columns for commencement, prom, homecoming and senior night.

Occasions

Balloon Columns for Graduations, Homecomings, Birthdays and Holidays

May and June graduations keep us busiest with columns, but they suit nearly every kind of event.

  • Graduation: school-color towers finished with a grad cap, a star or the class year, for backyard grad parties, prom and senior night.
  • Military homecomings: red, white and blue or navy-and-gold columns at the front door for a sailor or Marine coming home.
  • Weddings and bridal showers: organic columns in blush, or white and gold, beside the arbor or the reception door.
  • Birthdays: a column with the age on top, from first birthdays to 70th birthdays.
  • Gender reveals: a pink column and a blue column, each crowned with a question mark.
  • Company events and expos: columns in brand colors for booths, lobbies and ribbon cuttings.
  • Quinceañeras and debuts: a pair of columns flanking the court's entrance.

Outdoor columns

Outdoor Balloon Columns in San Diego Weather

Columns are tall and top-heavy, so the ones that go outside are built for wind.

  • Outdoor columns get heavier bases, and we tie them off to a post, rail or fence whenever there's one nearby, since afternoon sea breezes and fall Santa Anas both push on a tall column.
  • Air-filled columns outlast helium columns outdoors by a wide margin, and in Encinitas, Solana Beach and Del Mar helium isn't an option.
  • Shade matters most inland: direct summer sun in East County or Escondido fades and pops latex within a few hours, and dark colors heat up fastest.
  • For storefronts on busy, breezy streets, columns go where the building blocks the wind.

Longevity

How Long Does a Balloon Column Last?

Several days indoors. A few hours in hot, direct sun.

Indoors and air-filled, a balloon column keeps its shape for several days and often a week. Outside in coastal shade, figure on about a day. In direct sun on an inland summer afternoon, columns start to dull and pop within a few hours. For indoor events they can be built one or two days early, which makes morning graduations and school events much easier.

Questions

Balloon Columns in San Diego: FAQ

How much do balloon columns cost?

Our classic columns start at $85 each, spiral columns at $105, organic columns at $165 and towers with toppers at $185. Most entrances use a pair.

How many balloons does one column take?

A classic 5–6 ft column takes about 40–60 11-inch balloons and a 7–8 ft column about 60–80. Organic columns, with their mixed sizes, use 60–100 or more.

Which balloon size do columns use?

Most columns use 11-inch latex balloons in clusters of four. Organic columns mix in 5-inch and 16–18-inch balloons.

How long does a balloon column last?

Several days indoors when air-filled, about a day outside in coastal shade, and a few hours in direct sun on a hot inland day.

How early can columns be built?

One to two days ahead for indoor events. Outdoor columns in warm weather are set up the same day.

Are balloon columns, towers and pillars different?

Nothing that matters. All three names describe a freestanding stack of balloons on a pole and weighted base. "Tower" tends to mean a column with a large topper.

Can you put a number on top of a column?

Yes. A 34- or 40-inch foil number is the favorite topper, used for ages, anniversaries and graduation class years.

Do balloon columns need helium?

No. A column is air-filled and stands on its pole and weighted base. Helium would only go in a floating topper, and we leave that out where cities restrict helium.

Will balloon columns blow over outside?

Not when they're built for it. Outdoor columns get heavier bases and tie-offs, and we place them out of the wind where we can, which matters near the coast and on Santa Ana days.
